Hewing Hotel: A Culture As Strong As Timber

Music is just as much a part of the Hewing Hotel as its red-brick facade. Its storied halls held rehearsals for The Replacements and Soul Asylum, Minneapolis staples that brought life into the 80s and 90s. And every summer, Hewing picks up the pen and writes a new part of its musical history with the Summer Concert Series.

Starting in May and running until early October, the Hewing rooftop promises a curated lineup of local talents, exemplifying the melody of Minneapolis. Dan Israel opens the series on May 17th, performing hits from his award-winning albums.  With his signature laid-back rock, Israel’s hardworking spirit shines against the Minneapolis skyline. Al Church takes this hard act to follow and promises a showstopping experience on May 31. Performing his recent solo album “Night Games,” an 80s inspired romp that emphasizes his ample creativity, Church delivers a show perfect for those electric summer nights. And with 16 total summer showstoppers—from rapper, author, and groundbreaker Dessa to Tina Schlieske, a longtime Twin Cities rock icon—this year’s concerts will truly rock Hewing’s rooftop.

While music marinates above, culinary classics are revived in new flavors, down below at Tullibee. As guests watch their food nurtured in the open hearth and roasted in the traditional smoker, they become part of the gastronomy, joining the hardworking Midwesterners who forged fuel for generations. Their Wood and Lakes Pasta, crafted with braised bison straight from Minnesota's age-old-cookbook, pairs perfectly with the fired burst of the Embered Celery Root. Freshly foraged mushrooms bring the flavor of the forest to your plate beside the Smoked Squash Capelletti, and the Bone-In Short Rib melts your mouth, your heart, and the hearth.

Tullibee’s tastes are quintessential Midwest, and their ingredients are, too. They source every bite from the hardworking folks nearby—from Minneapolis staple Rustica Bakery to Hidden Stream Farm, a fourth generation family-owned homestead located up north in Elgin. Cultivated in a culture of grit and generosity, Tubilee not only fosters a craftsman’s kitchen, but a system that gives back to the local community.

Hewing truly honors the people of Minnesota, and includes them in every aspect of the hotel. Take John Pederson’s Thermaculture Thursdays, where Pederson uses the city as his medicine, practicing a culture of wellness rooted in community. He takes every guest on a journey of saunas, ancient baths, and a close camaraderie, where warmth and cold write a love letter to Minneapolis and our bodies. Even the smallest details come straight from Minnesotans, like the blankets resting atop the four-post beds, lovingly nurtured, harvested, and weaved at Faribault Woolen Mill, a fifth-generation vertical mill.

And with a stay at the Hewing, you can become a cherished chapter in Minnesota's storybook too.
